well, we all made it through the iowa caucuses last night! but many presidential candidates didn't even stick around for the results. jack/lam: the move is on from the hawkeye state to the granite state. the political battleground is now shifting east as democrats and republicans take their message to the folks in new hampshire ahead of next week's primary. "on the trail in new hampshire?fueled by iowa-inspired optimism? sot - cruz: what a victory last night!" ted cruz- pulling off a big win in the caucuses?ahead of?donald trump, the one-time front- runner -calling his 2nd place finish an honor- then tweeting "he hasn't been "given any credit by the voters" for self-funding his campaign. on his heels- marco rubio?talking with voters in the granite

expected third place finish- nats - "keep the momentum going, marco rubio: i will, that's why i'm here and campaign confidence today for both democratic candidates? despite leaving iowa in a virtual tie- clinton, declaring victory sot - hrc it was a good win. a really good win. bernie sanders- polling ahead in new back here today - by a sot - bernie sanders i just got in from iowa the world. (crowd cheering) and now we will astound the world again." mike huckabee and martin o'malley've dropped out of the race- mike huckabee and martin o'malley've dropped out of the race- but the rest of the candidates campaigns- now full-throttle here ahead of next week's primary. sot - gov. christie know i feel pretty good about our opportunity to break out here and i think that ground work that we've made is going to (?) next tuesday. jack/ram: one candidate - not in new hampshire today- was dr. ben carson.

off from the campaign trail. ted cruz apologized to him today for mistakenly telling people carson was dropping out of the race. stephanie/ram: meanwhile, on the democratic side the final results were not so clearly decided. local 5 chief political correspondent amanda krenz has more on the close race between hillary clinton and bernie sanders, as they both move onto new hampshire. amanda? amanda/bam: that's right stephanie. the fight for first place in iowa isn't over. the iowa democratic party says it was a historically close race. the bernie sanders campaign has heard there may have been some discrepencies with what happened at precincts and the results that were reported... so they're going to investigate, and hopefully sit down with the iowa democratic party to figure it all out. "rania 34:38 we have very strong supporters who are very passionate and have worked so hard, when you're talking about such a tight race and there are these questions that are unanswered you want those things to be rectified." andy 25:29 when you have that you hav eto make sure you verify the results and this

of the precincts accounted for, we've verified the results, we have our final results out. amanda one of the biggest concerns remains over coin flips. the iowa democratic party is away of 6 coin flips that happened to win the final delegate from a precinct. they say bernie sanders won five of them. amanda:bam:: and they say there are likely others that happened around the state that they don't know about. the reason being - some precincts reported results by phone - so they used a touch tone system that doesn't allow them to say if there was a coin flip... as opposed to precincts that reported with an app where precinct chairs had the option to report a coin flip if it happened. live in the studio, amanda krenz,

victory? local 5's digital news editor lucas casey is here with us now to break down the numbers. lucas? lucas: between the hours of 2:30 and about 10:00 a.m. tuesday morning, it felt like the winner of the iowa democratic caucuses would come down to the winner in the final, outstanding precinct, the elusive des moines numer 42. but, when we look deeper, that final precinct was only worth about 2 and a quarter statewide delegate equivalents, not enough to swing the race for sanders. so let's look across the state, and see how clinton did pull off this hairline victory, first by looking at the most populous, and therefore valuable states by delegate cont: woodbury, potawatamie, dallas, madison, polk, blackhawk, linn, johnson, scott, and dubuque. clinton only won four of these ten counties, and sanders had wider margins in several. what it came down to, oddly enough for clinton, she took a total of 60 iowa counties in all, including a vast majority of rurual areas, places much less kind to when she faced barack obama in 2008. in the digital media center, lucas casey, local 5 news, we are iowa. jack:

news now. jack/1shot: you need to be warned about a new phone scam -- that what the polk county sheriff's office is telling us. it comes from a recorded service with an 8-0-4 area code . it's been telling iowans they have a federal law suit filed against them and that they'll be arrested if they don't call back. polk county warns this type of call is fake. so hang up and don't call the number back. stephanie/1shot: a emergency on

missouri men died after falling through thin ice on little river lake. yesterday afternoon, decatur county officials pulled 63 year-old david adair and 33 year-old joe adair from the lake, officials said the ice was so thin that rescuers couldn't stand or crawl on it. jack: coming up on local 5 news at six, the iowa mens basketball team is making headlines. we'll hear from the newest face of the regional sports illustrated cover later in sports. stephanie: but next. the snow left road conditions a little messy today. we'll take a look at how crews tried to keep up and what to expect in your forecast, after this.

after the 1-3 start to the big 12 season iowa state had-- it's interesting to look back and think there was panic amongst some in cyclone nation. but since then they've reeled off four straight conference wins with a chance at a fifth tonight against west virginia. in that span they've taken down number one oklahoma and number kansas. this will wrap up a 5 game stretch that has pitted i-s-u against four top 15 opponents. the cyclones have shown a new spark since steve prohm has

coach. prohm is doing prohm-- and that means stronger defense and smarter possessions. tonight they'll have to add toughness to that mix as they take on the 14th ranked mountaineers. "the biggest thing, you can't have a lot of ball turnovers. but as much as the press is important. they kill you on the glass. we've gotta get stops and we have to rebound. they rebound almost 50 percent of their misses. which is incredible. that's his m-o that's what makes his teams good. their toughness and competitive drive and their will. i just know it's going to be a tough matchup every time we lace up against west virginia and the rough fouls that they do that's just how they play. you can't get mad at them that's just what they know so that's what we go to expect when we play those guys. " a win for the cyclones tonight would move them to 6-3 and make it a 4 way tie for second place in the conference standings. jon: as for the iowa hawkeyes-- they just keep on rolling. a minor road bump against maryland is the only point where we've them slip up. but outside of

"(alex giaimo) iowa athletics has taken the media world by storm this past year. jarrod uthoff is just the latest hawkeye to be featured on the cover of sports illustrated magazine. he's the first iowa basketball player to be on the cover since the 1966 season. and of course he folllows george kittle and the iowa football team who were on the cover just a few months ago marking the first time in school history that football and basketball have been featured in the magazine in the same year. (fran mccaffery) when you see them working as hard as our guys work you want to see them recognized properly so i think it's a terrific honor. (mike gesell) you know it's really cool to get national recognition like that i think it's a lot of fun for our university with the season football had and now the season that we are having you know it'ex exciting times to be a hawkeye. (anthony clemmons) holy buckets.. (giaimo) fran and the hawks are excited about the cover but what does j-u himself think about the honor? (jarrod uthoff) it's

(adam woodbury) i mean he's a pretty low key guy not a big deal i'm sure when you guys asked him he said he didn't care at all so it's kind of funny he doesn't have tv or internet or things like that so it's funny that he's getting all the attention that he's getting. (giaimo) (jarrod uthoff) to me it's about us. as the hawkeyes and what we've accomplished as (jarrod uthoff) to me it's about us. as the hawkeyes and what we've accomplished as a team. it has nothing to do with what i've done as an individual. we've come a long ways. (alex giaimo) the football and basketball teams will again collide right here at carver hawkeye arena on wednesday night. the football team will be honored during halftime and it's also fran mccaffery bobble head night. in iowa city with your hawkeye " the hawkeyes and nittany lions tomorrow-- penn state sitting 11 and 11 on the season just 2-7 in big ten play. iowa looking for their 9th win of the big ten season. jon/sx3s stephanie/sx3s jack/sx3s jon/sx3s stephanie/sx3s jack/sx3s we'll be right back... you're watching local five news at six. jack/wxhang: now one last
